Learning new hair skills, streamlining the styling process and sharing all I know to help others grow, develop and build confidence is a big part of my life. I have taught hair styling for big brands, smaller brands, hair trade schools, and under the banner of my own business and know for certain that it can be the most rewarding skill that can take us as far as we dare to go.
It hasn’t always been this way though. I remember always loving hair and wanting to be a hairstylist when I was in school. When I began working in salon and attending long awaited hair trade school, the upstyling unit was a steep learning curve for me. As much as I wanted to love it, I more so found it tricky to get a decent result where the pins didn’t show, that didn’t look over sprayed, or just managed to defy gravity and actually hold. Over time I improved a little and managed to pass the unit. Then came the real clients and all that comes with them - Juggling consults, expectations, others opinions, hair types, anxiety of when they get up and move will it fall out? Wind, humidity it was a whole different ballgame.
I have come to learn that this steep learning curve is common.
Traditional schools haven’t shifted much from the styles I was taught 25 years ago. There’s something to be said for learning the basics first of course, but I’ve found that a lot of what hairstylists initially learn does not translate to what clients are asking for and want to wear in 2025.
A lot of us trying to master upstyling have no choice but to struggle if we don’t have a mentor to show us.
I was lucky I did have someone to show me the ropes all those years ago in the salon I worked at, but so many of us don’t.
This can manifest into beating ourselves up after a styling booking thinking of all the things we think we did wrong (we have all been there, like why aren’t my hands doing what my brain is saying?!), hiding out the back when a client wants to book for an upstyle or begging another stylist to take them into their column (yep, been there too!), not growing that area of your business and missing out on financial or time freedom, not having that start up or side hustle you’ve always wanted and letting your ultimate job satisfaction pass you by.
